BT Wholesale Broadband
Availability Checker
Although the Elmswell exchange will be enabled for
broadband from 26th November 2003, distance of the
subscriber from the exchange will still be a factor in
determining whether one is close enough to the exchange
to obtain broadband and also whether speeds faster than
the standard 500 Kbps are feasible.
The result of entering your telephone number on the BT
Wholesale website may also indicate that removal of ISDN
or some other adaptation of your telephone line is needed
before it can provide broadband.
Our local telephone exchange is located in Elmswell on
the northern side of Church Road, close to the new
Gardener's Walk development: click here to see a see map (65 kB)
As a general rule, ADSL broadband at the
"normal" speed for home users of 512 Kbps speed
is feasible as far as 5.5 km from the exchange; for the
higher 1 or 2 Mbps speeds the subscriber needs to be
within 3.5 km of the exchange. And what counts is not
distance in a straight line but the total length of the
telephone cable to the subscriber.
If you get an unexpected result from the broadband
checker, it may be worth confirming whether your
immediate neighbours get the same result for broadband
delivery possibility.
Note also that the BT checker is not a definitive answer,
so if you decide to place an order with an ISP for
broadband, a further test will be performed to confirm if
your line is suitable and what speed of service is
possible.
Results from using the checker
To find out what the BT Wholesale Broadband Checker says
about your line, enter the telephone number you intend to
use for broadband on the webpage:
http://www.bt.com/broadband/
For most subscribers, the result should be a "good
news" message:For Telephone
Number 0135924xxxx on Exchange ELMSWELL
Good news - Your exchange will have broadband ADSL by
26th November 2003.
Our initial test on your line suggests that you may be
able to have a broadband ADSL service that provides up to
2Mbps download speed.(1)
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be
done to confirm if your line is suitable, and if so for
what speed of service.
Thank you for your interest.
(1) If you are further from the exchange, this paragraph
may read:
"Our initial test on your line suggests that you
may be able to have a broadband ADSL service that
provides up to 512Kbps download speed, but the upstream
bandwidth will vary according to the length of your
telephone line. It will not be possible to provide the
1Mbps or 2Mbps broadband ADSL services."
You may also find that there are additional Notes to the
message which are IMPORTANT and REQUIRE
YOU TO TAKE ADDITIONAL ACTIONS BEFORE BROADBAND CAN BE
DELIVERED.
Three examples of such notes are shown below.
Example 1:
Note: Our records indicate that a line-sharing device is
connected to your line. This is the reason that the
checker has returned this marginal result and may mean
that Broadband could not be delivered on this line.
Further investigations would be necessary as part of the
ordering process to confirm whether or not you could
receive Broadband service at this address. This could
result in a delay to the provision of broadband at this
address.
Example 2:
Note: If you have an ISDN or Home Highway service
connected to this number and you wish to purchase
Broadband ADSL, then the current service will have to be
converted to a standard PSTN line. Provided the line and
exchange support ADSL, your service provider may be able
to arrange the conversion for you. If you have an
existing Broadband ADSL service and wish to change
Service providers then please contact both your new and
existing Service Provider to have this service
transferred.
Example 3:
Note: Our Records indicate that you have a product or
service supplied to this line that is currently
incompatible with broadband. You will need to have the
product or service ceased before broadband could be
provided. If you place an order before the incompatible
product or service has been ceased then the order will be
rejected.
For a limited number of subscribers, there will
unfortunately be a "bad news"
message, principally due to distance from the exchange
but perhaps for some other reason (e.g. the number may be
the second line on a line-sharing device)
For Telephone Number 0135924xxxx on Exchange ELMSWELL
Your exchange will have broadband ADSL by 26th November
2003.
However, the length of the telephone line between you and
the exchange is too long for broadband ADSL.
Thank you for your interest.
The following "not known"
message may appear in some cases (mainly for new
subscribers):
There is no data available for this number. This
could be either because this is not a BT line or this is
a new number that is not yet recognised by this checker.
If this is a new number it may take up to 42 days from
the date of installation before it is recognised. If you
still get this response after this time please send an
email through the "contact us" option on the
BT.com homepage, raising this issue, and we will
investigate for you. Thank you for your interest.
